EQUESTRIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 2
Top two seeds in both disciplines advance to finals.
The top seeds in both the Western and Hunter Seat disciplines advanced to the championship match with semifinal victories Friday. In Western action, top-seeded Texas A&M will face off against second-seeded and defending western champion TCU, while No. 1 seeded Auburn hopes to repeat its Hunter Seat team championship of last season when they take on second-ranked Georgia in the finals.
In semifinal hunter seat action Auburn downed Baylor, 5-3, while Georgia slipped past South Carolina 3-2. On the western side, Texas A&M advanced with a 7-1 win over Oklahoma State and TCU downed Georgia in a tiebreaker 985-965.5 after a 4-4 tie. Oklahoma State will duel Georgia for third place in the Western bracket while Baylor and South Carolina will ride for third place in hunter seat competition.
Individual competition began on Friday in all four events. In Equitation over Fences Auburn’s Anna Schierholz and Maggie McAlary advanced as well as Georgia’s Haylie Jayne and Kelley Cowperthwait. while Victoria Middleton and Carly Babcock of South Carolina, Jayne and Ally Blais (OSU) won their matchups in Equitation on the Flat. On the western side, New Mexico State’s Kate Chesley advanced in both Reining and Horsemanship. Also advancing in Reining was Oklahoma State’s Bri Parnell, TCU’s Carrie Von Uhlit and defending reining champion Sarah Locker of Georgia. In Horsemanship, top-ranked and defending champion Caroline Gunn of Texas A&M advanced and was joined by Kansas State’s Alyssa Freeman and TCU’s Courtney Chown.
Action begins again on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. with Horsemanship and Equitation Over Fences at the Heart O Texas Fair and Rodeo Complex.
Horsemanship’s championship round begins at 2:30 p.m., followed by reining at 4:30 p.m. Flat championship rounds, team and individual, begin at 1:30 p.m. followed by Fences at 3:30 p.m.
