Georgia Earns Fifth Overall VENC Title - Texas A&M claims Western championship, Georgia wins Hunter Seat title.
WACO, Texas – The University of Georgia’s equestrian team claimed its fifth overall team title at the Varsity Equestrian Championships (VENC) on Saturday at the Heart O’Texas Fair Complex at Waco, Texas. The Bulldogs defeated Texas A&M in a ride-off and a tie-breaker for the overall national championship and South Carolina claimed third place in the overall standings.
The Bulldogs and the Aggies tied for the overall title so a ride-off, a first in the VENC, was in order. In the ride-off, one rider from each school in each event is selected to compete. Both teams were tied at the end of the four events, Georgia won both Hunter Seat events and Texas A&M was victorious in both Western events. The tie-breaker was implemented and Georgia won, 603.5-579.
Ride-Off (in order of competition)
Flat - Michelle Morris (UGA) def. Elizabeth Solch (TAMU), 174-144
Horsemanship – Caroline Gunn (TAMU) def. Lauren Love (UGA), 148.5-141)
Fences – Kacy Jenkins (UGA) def. Lindsay Smith (TAMU), 152-145
Reining – Maggie Gratny (TAMU) def. Diandra St. Hilaire (UGA), 141.5-136.5
Georgia, under the direction of head coach Meghan Boenig and assistant coach Logan Fiorentino, claimed its fifth Hunter Seat team title and swept both individual titles as well. The top-seeded Bulldogs downed Auburn, 5-3, in the title match, winning three points in Equitation Over Fences and two in Equitation on the Flat. Two sophomores, Michelle Morris and Emma Lipman claimed national individual titles in Flat and Fences, respectively.
In Western competition, top-seeded Texas A&M rolled to its fourth team title by sweeping Horsemanship and claiming two of the four Reining rides to down sixth-ranked Kansas State, 6-2. Coached by Tana McKay, Linzy Woolf and Beth Bass, the Aggies also swept individual national championship honors. For the second straight season, senior Caroline Gunn won in Horsemanship while senior Maggie Gratny claimed her first national title in Reining.
In addition, Gunn was named the competition’s most valuable western rider while South Carolina freshman Kimberly McCormack was named most valuable hunter seat rider.
