JANUARY RIDERS OF THE MONTH
Student-athletes chosen as January riders of the month. The National Collegiate Equestrian Association awards Amy Lang (New Mexico State University) and Rachel Wetherall (Kansas State University) with January Student-Athlete of the Month award.
Amy Lang (NMSU) is the Hunter Seat Student-Athlete of the Month. Lang is a senior majoring in animal science from Austin, Texas and competes in Equitation over Fences for the Aggies. Lang is undefeated in the month of January with a record of 2-0.
Both of Lang’s wins were earned on the road where she also earned MVP honors in one of her matches.
Rachel Wetherall (KSU) is the Western Student-Athlete of the Month. Wetherall is a sophomore from Linn Grove, Iowa and competes in Horsemanship, for Kansas State University. Throughout the month of January she has been undefeated, 2-0, in Horsemanship earning both of her wins on the road. Rachel also earned MVP honors in one of her matches.
The National Collegiate Equestrian Association will be selecting a Student-Athlete of the Month each month for the remainder of the 2011-2012 seasons, January – April. Monthly awards will be given in the months of September, October, November, January, February, March, and April starting with the 2012-2013 season.
AUBURN MAINTAINS NO. 1 SPOT IN COACHES POLL
The Auburn Tigers are still atop the collegiate equestrian world, but they have a new team on their tails. Georgia, ranked fourth at the beginning of the season, has continued to move up, and now finds itself ranked second in the latest Women’s Intercollegiate Equestrian National Coaches Poll.
Texas A&M falls to No. 3 in the poll after closing out its fall schedule with a one-point loss at Baylor on Nov. 18. The Aggies had been ranked second all season until now.
The Baylor Bears maintain their fourth spot in the poll. But Oklahoma State, coming off an impressive win at South Carolina on Jan. 29, moves up one spot to No. 5. Kansas State, which had been ranked fifth, falls back to No. 6.
South Carolina is still ranked seventh, as the Gamecocks are coming off a loss at home to the Cowgirls on Sunday.
TCU starts the spring where it ended the fall, ranked eighth, followed by New Mexico State, which holds steady at No. 9.
SMU and Tennessee-Martin close out the Top-10, as both schools tied for the final spot.
The collegiate coaches competing under the Varsity Equestrian Championship umbrella initiated the national poll.
The poll will be released bi-monthly with the next announcement scheduled for Feb. 15, 2012.
